Euryhaline teleosts possess the capacity to osmoregulate under various environmental conditions (freshwater to hypersaline water). Clonality and genetic structure of the coral Pocillopora damicornis sensu lato were assessed using five microsatellites in 12 populations from four islands of the Society Archipelago (French Polynesia) sampled in June 2008. The 427 analysed specimens fell into 132 multilocus genotypes (MLGs), suggesting that asexual reproduction plays an important role in the maintenance of these populations. A haploweb analysis of ITS2 sequences of each MLG was consistent with all of them being conspecific. Genetic differentiation was detected both between and within islands, but when a single sample per MLG was included in the analyses, the populations turned out to be nearly panmictic. Solitary LTR loci are the predominant form of LTR retrotransposons in most eukaryotic genomes. They originate from recombination between the two LTRs of an ancestral retrovirus and are therefore incapable of transposition. Despite this inactivity, they appear to have a substantial impact on the host genome. Here we use the murine RMER10 LTR family as an example to describe how such elements can reshape regions of the genome through multiple mutations on an evolutionary time scale. Marine species with high fecundity and high early mortality may also have high variance in reproductive success among individuals due to stochastic factors, making successful reproduction a "sweepstakes." Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (theta = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population. To investigate the origin and maintenance of the genetic discontinuity between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of the common sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) we analysed the genetic variation at a fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence for 18 population samples. The result were also compared with new or previously published microsatellite data. Seven mitochondrial haplotypes and an average nucleotidic divergence of 0.02 between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations that matches a Pleistocene allopatric isolation were found. The geographical structure of 15 natural populations of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) was assessed by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) of a 313-base-pair (bp) fragment of the mitochondrial 12S-rRNA gene. Fourteen haplotypes were observed, with one being dominant in the Mediterranean samples and another one in the Atlantic populations. Two oyster species are cultivated on the French coasts: the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), which has been introduced from Japan in the 1970's after the disappearance of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulala, and the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis). During the second half of the 1960's, the latter suffered successively from two diseases caused by protozoan parasites: marteiliosis (also called "maladie des Abers") and bonamiosis. In France, its production dropped from 20,000 tian in the 1960's to 2,000 today. The impact of these two pathogens as well as the exploitation of the remaining stocks show the importance of the conservation of this species, the only natural European species, whose population is more and more fragmented. |

In order to document further the phenomena of variance in reproductive success in natural populations of the European flat oyster Ostrea Midis, two complementary studies based on natural and experimental populations were conducted. The first part of this work was focused on paternity analyses using a set of four microsatellite markers for larvae collected from 13 brooding females sampled in Quiberon Bay (Brittany, France). Natural populations of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, have been harvested since Roman times. This species is distributed along the European Atlantic coasts, from Norway to Morocco, as well as the Mediterranean Sea and Black sea coasts. Previous studies, based on allozymes, have concluded that isolation by distance is taking place in the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean.
